Width, Length & Height
The best place to start is the basics – how do I know which side of my shed I’m looking at? Let’s use these graphics as an example.
The width of a shed is measured along the gable/skillion end.
The length of a shed is measured along the eave side.
The height of a shed is measured from floor level to the eave.
For skillion sheds, height is measured at both the high and low eaves.
Gable Side
On gable sheds, the roof line has its highest point in the centre of the shed's width
Skillion Side
On skillion sheds, the roof line has its highest point at one eave.
Eave Side
The edge running along the length of a shed.
Gutters and downpipes are fitted along this edge to collect stormwater from the roof.

Roof
The top of a shed. Keeps shed contents safe from the elements - whether it be rain, hail or shine.
Roof Pitch
The angle of a shed's roof line.

C-Section
Structural member whose profile (cross-section) resembles the letter C.
Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS)
Structural member with a hollow rectangular profile.
Universal Beam (UB)
Structural member sometimes known as an I-Beam or H-Beam because its profile resembles either the letter I or H.
Top Hat
Structural member whose profile resembles the shape of a top hat.
Z-Section
Structural member whose profile resembles the letter Z.
Columns
Any vertical structural member situated at a shed's corners and along the length at each bay where required.
Mullions
Similarly to columns, a vertical structural member used as reinforcement throughout the structure. Also used for doors.
Headers
The mullion's horizontal counterpart, a structural member used as reinforcement throughout the structure. Also used for doors.
Rafters
Any structural member following the roof pitch. Runs along the width of the shed. Used as purlin support.
Roof Purlins
Any horizontal structural member used as a roof support. Runs along the length of the shed.
Wall Girts
Any horizontal structural member used as a wall support.
